ABOUT CULTURE SHOCK

The Shockoe Arts & Culture is proud to present - The Culture Shock Pop-Up, a dual initiative of live experiences designed to bring energy, culture, and community to the heart of Richmond’s historic Shockoe Bottom district. Pop-ups are powered by the City of Richmond, and hosted by both Main Street Station and The 17th Market, in celebration of the Shockoe community.
Culture Shock Pop-Ups feature a diverse lineup of local and national artists spanning genres and disciplines. Main Street Station utilizes both indoor and outdoor spaces designed to put hyper-local creativity on a national stage — premium in feel, open in spirit. While 17th Street Market transforms the space into a vibrant public commons where music, food, art, and community intersect.

Culture Shock seeks to strengthen community connection, celebrate local culture, and reimagines Shockoe as a dynamic gathering space that remains active and accessible, welcoming, safe, and distinctly Richmond year-round.

ABOUT SHOCKOE ARTS & CULTURE (SAC)

Shockoe Arts & Culture (SAC) is a committee of community stakeholders dedicated to celebrating, preserving, and elevating the historical and cultural significance of the Shockoe area through expanded access to arts, music, and cultural programming. Composed of local property and business owners, residents, municipal representatives, nonprofit leaders, and community advocates, SAC is a multi-pronged community-driven initiative working to secure the official designation of portions of Shockoe Bottom and Shockoe Slip as a recognized Arts & Culture District.
Rooted in the area's rich cultural history and inspired by the possibilities of its creative future, SAC seeks to amplify the arts, culture, and stories that define the district. Through cultural programming, public art, live performances, creative placemaking, and strategic partnerships, SAC activates public spaces, supports artists and creative entrepreneurs, strengthens community connections, and positions Shockoe as a premier destination for arts, culture, and innovation in Richmond.
SAC measures its impact through increased arts and cultural programming, community participation, artist and creative engagement, strategic partnerships, support for local businesses, tourism activity, and public awareness. The initiative also aims to attract investment in cultural programming, enhance neighborhood vibrancy, preserve cultural heritage, and contribute to positive public safety outcomes through consistent community-centered arts and cultural experiences.
